〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Yue Katou
CHARACTER AGE: 17 years old
CANON ORIGIN: Angel Sanctuary
CHRONOLOGY: End-of-series
CLASS: Anti-Hero
HOUSING: Randomize me!
BACKGROUND:
Yue Katou was born as the child of an extramarital affair between a woman and her lover, a fact which was kept from him for a good part of his life. His childhood was an abusive one, where his father named him "Yue" hoping that it would make him die quicker, and would alternate between beating and ignoring him. Katou tried and tried to win his father's love, but it wasn't until he discovered a picture of his mother with her lover-- a man whom he strongly resembled-- that he became disillusioned and gave up hope. He became a delinquent, turning to drugs and alcohol and violence to forget all about his problems. He ran in a gang with a bunch of guys, including a guy named Sakuya Kira.
And you'd think that a run-in with Rosiel (an evil angel who pretended to be a dealer and took control of Katou's body with fake drugs), and Katou ending up dying at the hand of Setsuna Mudou (a kid he regularly bullied, ironically) would mean the end of Katou in this story, but you'd be very wrong.
Upon arriving in Hades— the afterlife, Katou was told by the being in charge of the place, Enra-Ou, that he doesn't have enough positive energy from his life to make it into Heaven on his own, and gives him a mission to kill Setsuna when he comes to Hades so that Katou can gain his way into Heaven. He's given a cross-shaped rod that is said to absorb people's power and energy in order to do that.
Setsuna does come soon after that, intent on rescuing Sara, the sister he loves so much and who had died not long after Katou did. (Sara is also Setsuna's girlfriend. Yes, that's incest. The first few volumes are about Setsuna's angst over the incest factor.) Enra-Ou claims that Sara was already in the hands of the executioner of Hades, and that Katou will help Setsuna get to the executioner. Though Katou meant to betray Setsuna, he starts to soften on the boy even while looking for an opportunity to betray him. At one point, the cross-shaped rod ends up in Setsuna's hands in order to fight one of the ghouls roaming around Hades.
As Katou argues with himself because of his softening heart, he runs across a mask that attaches itself to his face and controls him. Under the control of the mask, he starts attacking Setsuna under the behest of a young woman who resembles Sara. (She's Doll, the one in control of the mask.) Setsuna, upon finding out that Katou is under control, calls out for Katou to shake the control of the mask— that Katou has every right to hate him, he won't complain if Katou kills him, but only if it's him killing Setsuna and not a mask. His words reach out to Katou, who manages to shake off the control of the mask partially.
Unfortunately, the mask can't disappear entirely, so Katou grabs Setsuna's hand and forces him to stab Katou with the cross rod so that Setsuna can absorb his energy and go on. Setsuna's upset about it, but Katou insists that he's only doing it so that at least one person will remember that he exists, and then his body dissolves into nothingness.
Setsuna unconsciously used time magic at that time, and a tiny fragment of Katou remained attached to the cross rod. It's using that fragment that the executioner that Setsuna was looking for, Uriel, helps Setsuna to rescue Katou from the frozen time his spirit is stuck in. Upon entering Katou's spiritual world, he sees a lot of the worst parts of Katou's life. But even as Katou despairs, Setsuna insists that Katou is strong for making it through all that, and feeds him one of his (Setsuna's) feathers as the reincarnation of the Organic Angel, Alexiel, so as to restore him to... not quite life, he's still dead, but back into not being utterly destroyed. Taking on the feather also means his existence has been intertwined with Setsuna's "debt" as the reincarnation of Alexiel.
Upon waking up, Uriel gives Katou an option while Setsuna is still recovering from his trip into Katou's spiritual world— either he can choose to go back into the reincarnation cycle now, or he can help Setsuna in a battle against heaven or hell. "I'd rather die than run away from someone who needs me," says Katou with confidence, and he goes with Setsuna to help Setsuna escape from Hades and go back to his life. The only way, according to Uriel, is to give Enra-Ou such a shock to his system that he can't stop Setsuna.
So the two go to fight Enra-Ou, Katou once again bearing the cross shaped rod, and split up— Setsuna directly faces of against Enra-Ou, and Katou stands by for Setsuna's word at the Cauldron of Souls that Enra-Ou controls, the place that souls are kept until they are judged. Setsuna threatens to have Katou destroy the Cauldron of Souls unless Enra-Ou willingly allows him to go back to life, but Enra-Ou refuses, and Katou uses the cross rod to destroy the Cauldron at Setsuna's request. Enra-Ou is incapacitated and the way to the land of the living is revealed. Setsuna tries to help Katou as he escapes, but Katou reveals that using the cross rod absorbed most of his spiritual energy, and he can't hold on to his form anymore. So Setsuna escapes, and Katou is reduced to a flicker.
Uriel takes the flicker that remains of Katou and restores his energy, also giving him a new body to use so he's not just a spirit anymore. The body is a realistic reproduction of a human body, only it's made of plants (as plants are one of Uriel's domains). Katou remains with Uriel for a time, until it's discovered that while Setsuna was brought back to life upon escaping Hades, it was in the body of his original incarnation of Alexiel— the body of Setsuna was dead. So Uriel plots to have Setsuna's body restored so that it can be used properly, and sends Katou to go help him with his plan.
Katou goes to Earth first, which is frozen in time, and attacks some of the angel Michael's minions in an attempt to draw out Michael. Then he goes to kidnap Setsuna's real body, running into Kira along the way. They have a brief exchange where Katou tries to show off some of his new abilities due to being partially an angelic spirit now (because of his connection to Setsuna and Alexiel), but Kira brushes it off when he senses Setsuna's spirit in danger and runs off. Katou is irritated, but takes Setsuna's body and drags it off to Earth.
Michael shows up, along with another angel in tow, Raphael, and Sara, who is currently trapped herself in a body not her own, that of the angel Gabriel (also called Jibrille). That's when Katou springs Uriel's trap and they're all sectioned off into a closed dimension, where Uriel manages to get Raphael, as the only angel with the ability to resurrect people, to resurrect Setsuna's body. Upon being brought back to life, Setsuna briefly sees Sara and recognizes her despite her being in the wrong body, but everyone's trying to escape the barrier as it's under attack, so they miss each other. Setsuna calls out to Sara that he'll go rescue her.
Katou, Setsuna, and Uriel go to the lowest layer of Hell, Anagura, where some of Setsuna's friend are hanging out, including a princess named Kurai and, of course, Kira. Katou finds out that Kira is actually the immortal spirit of an unholy sword that had following Alexiel's reincarnations for centuries. Setsuna is then contacted through a communications device Uriel had given him. Zaphikiel, an angel from heaven, sends his subordinate, Raziel, and offers Setsuna a chance to rescue his sister. Setsuna goes off on his own, leaving Katou and everyone else behind.
Setsuna eventually comes back down to Anagura, having not only been succcessful, but also temporarily dumped by Sara until they both mature and also having left Zaphikiel to get captured by those in Heaven who would punish him for his rebellion against the current authority there. Raziel, having been left behind in Anagura, is incensed that his mentor has been left, and goes to rescue Zaphikiel. Katou and Kira gang up to kick Setsuna's ass until he stops angsting over fucking up so badly, and the three decide to go to heaven together to rescue Zaphikiel.
In Heaven, the three meet up with Anima Mundi, the group that Zaphikiel had been leading in his rebellion, and manage to convince the group to help them get to the prison Zaphikiel is being kept in. Riette, an angel who is more interested in science than anything else, says he'll only lend his ship if Katou's body is given to him. Setsuna and Kira agree without hesitation, to Katous' irritation, though they say it'll have to wait until after the mission. Riette and Katou hang partially behind while Kira and Setsuna go on to the prison, but when they see trouble, Katou drags Riette along to go help out.
Zaphikiel dies, but not before it's discovered that he was actually Raziel's father, and Katou, Kira, and Setsuna head back down to Anagura. But there's trouble there— everyone seems to be missing. Setsuna races ahead, while Katou and Kira keep looking around. Katou notices that Kira is bleeding, but Kira is too busy sensing Rosiel's presence there. Kira punches Katou in the gut so he can't follow him, tells Katou that he could never quite let go of Katou even though he was always trouble, and that playing as human stops there for him (Kira). Then he drops his sword, Shiranui, next to Katou and runs away.
Katou pursues angrily, somewhat slowed by the punch that Kira had delivered, and gets to the scene of Kira and Setsuna fighting Rosiel just in time to watch Rosiel kill Kira. He's then locked out, and— the layers of hell all collapse and Katou is injured further in the process. He's already slipping, too far gone to remember what he looks like enough to hold on to his own image as is required for his plant body to keep his face up, and takes the image of the last person he sees before he passes out. He wakes up with amnesia, no longer looking like himself and desperately trying to figure out what's wrong, with only the sword Shiranui beside him.
Katou has taken the form of a commander of some angelic forces, and has thrown himself into work without proper medical treatment. When he runs into Setsuna and Uriel, he starts to remember who he is, and attacks and kills all the angels who were about to attack Setsuna. Uriel approaches him and asks if he remembers, and Katou admits he does, and takes his own appearance again. Setsuna hugs him, desperately happy to see him, and the two go off together.
There's a mission by Anima Mundi to attack the mansion that the leader of heaven, Sevrotharte, has been hiding in. Katou volunteers to take on Setsuna's appearance and be a decoy for him on one front of an attack while Setsuna, Raziel, and a few others sneak into the mansion. Katou realizes that Rosiel's in the mansion, and charges out to it to warn Setsuna. When he gets there, he notices two things— one, there are corpses everywhere and there's NO WAY Setsuna did that. Two, the sword is vibrating and his head feels like splitting, and he's getting a very bad feeling because of it.
Rosiel is there with a mysterious masked figure, who is attacking Setsuna. Katou jumps in front of the attack so Setsuna's not hurt, and attacks the masked figure with the sword. But the figure explains that the sword could never hurt him, its master— and reveals himself to be Lucifer. And Lucifer is who Kira really was before he ended up trapped in a sword for thousands of years and eventually taking on the body of a teenage boy.
Lucifer and Rosiel leave, and Katou's body has been grievously injured by Lucifer, to the point where it won't heal properly at all. Katou and Setsuna are both devastated by the revelation of Kira being Lucifer and no longer caring about either of them. Setsuna leaves on a mission to get Sara back from Raphael, who is now holding her and refusing to let Setsuna see her again. Meanwhile, Katou approaches Riette and gives the angel his left arm, which has started to rot off anyway after his injuries, and gets a replacement cyborg arm. He then goes to where Setsuna is just in time to get a chance to fight Lucifer.
He angrily lectures Setsuna about how Lucifer isn't Kira anymore, the Kira they knew is dead, and manages to prove it by sticking his new hand through Lucifer only for Lucifer to quickly regenerate from the wound. Katou states he can't forgive Lucifer for looking and sounding like Kira, and that he'll make him vanish from Katou's world. Setsuna ends up fighting Lucifer, and when Lucifer realizes that Setsuna's fully awakened into his angelic powers, he lets them know to meet him in the Tower of Etenamenki that resides in the highest layer of Heaven, Atziluth.
What Katou doesn't tell anyone is that his injury from Lucifer is still affecting him, and he's been cutting himself to even remember who he is. Upon discovering this fact when he runs into Katou doing this, Uriel wants to help Katou. But Katou threatens him, telling him that he'll kill Uriel if he takes Katou away. He explains that the reason he let Riette operate on his arm, that he's doing any of this, is that he's been changing for Setsuna and Kira's sakes, because he promised. He doesn't want to lose himself, he doesn't want to die like this and let his soul wither away. He can't stand not to fight to his last, he'd be betraying himself. Reluctantly, Uriel doesn't take Katou away. He gives him some medication to help stave off the effects of the injury, and also gives Katou a secret weapon to fight with.
When Katou, Setsuna, Michael, and Uriel get to the gates to the highest layer of heaven, Lucifer is already there. A sacrifice has been made so that Rosiel could get in, and Lucifer is calmly standing there with Alexiel's body. A demon named Balbero who cares deeply for Lucifer makes everyone hallucinate in order to distract them, but the fog she's using to cause the hallucinations doesn't work on Katou, who stabs her in the chest to break the illusions.
Katou finally admits to everyone that he's slowly losing his memories. When Setsuna tries to offer his sympathy, Katou snaps that he doesn't even remember Setsuna's name, and that he doesn't want his pity. The only thing he remembers, Katou claims, is that he wants to kill Lucifer. At this point, he pulls out the secret weapon that Uriel had given him— the egg of wormwood, which is supposed to rain destruction on all of creation. Uriel had thought when it was used that there would be a distinction between "good" and "evil" souls, but that turns out to not be true when Katou unleashes its power.
As the gates of Atzulith start to close, Katou grabs the sword Shiranui once again and goes to attack Lucifer. Lucifer gives Katou a killing blow, but not enough to kill him immediately, and asks why Katou attacked him with that sword when he knew it wouldn't work on Lucifer. Katou says that he'd forgotten, then admits that he was lying about that. Katou falls to the ground.
As Setsuna makes a break for the gate, he ends up getting grabbed by a not-dead-yet Balbero, who makes him fall over. Michael kills her, but Setsuna can't get up in time to make it past the gates. At this point, Katou uses the absolute last of his strength to hold open the gates so that Setsuna can make it through. He pushes Setsuna in.
"Though I don't know any of you, I'm not stupid. See ya, Setchan."
Katou backs away from the door as it closes, giving everyone one last smile as he muses that he's not fit to enter heaven anyway. He collapses by the gate, leaning against it, and sees a shining star as he's dying. The last thing he sees before he's gone for good is a brief hallucination of Kira, and then he dies.
PERSONALITY:
Katou has a tendency of acting carefree and nonchalant, never holding a grudge because hey--it's the past, what's the point? He even asks Setsuna as much when they meet up in Hades, saying that he's not going to hold a grudge for getting killed by Setsuna. It's an attitude that baffles Setsuna. Katou would rather act cheerfully obnoxious to the people he likes— such as telling Kira in a loud and abrupt way that he'd think Kira was insane if he'd told Katou while he was allive that he was an immortal spirit previously trapped in a sword. To the people he doesn't care about, he'll often just be rude, abrasive, and thuggish— hence why he often beat up Setsuna in life.
Katou doesn't care for social mores, and can be a bit eccentric at times. It's a personality that Kira recognizes traces of from Setsuna when Setsuna returns from Hades, though since Kira didn't know at the time that Setsuna had run into Katou, he dismisses the association as impossible. He'll say and do the first thing that comes to mind, even if it's not always the brightest idea.
If a situation is too much, he'll try to escape it any way he can. It's why he'd turned to drugs in his life, trying to escape from the pain of his family life. He'd even been too high to bother going to his father's funeral, despite Kira trying to convince him that he needed to face his pain. His need to escape also manifests itself by dismissing things as no big deal. "I'm not afraid of death!" he tells Setsuna in Hades, though Setsuna refutes that by quoting back Katou's own words when he died in front of Setusna. It hurt him too much, and he didn't want to face his own problems. As a result of his own childhood, he'd built the façade of his own attitutde. He views himself as worthless and unwanted, a feeling that he never does quite shake himself of.
His entire attitude was about escapism, trying to get away from an unjust world. It's not until Setsuna resuced Katou that he starts to try and face his problems head-on, instead of running away. Though Katou never gets a chance to really confront the pain of his childhood, he learns to fight for what he believes in. "I need to fight or my soul will rot!" are words he tells Uriel when the angel finds out Katou is losing his memories. They're an echo of something Kira had once told him when he was too scared to go to his father's funeral, but Katou hadn't absorbed them until Setsuna planted himself firmly in front of Katou and said, "You're strong. You've always been fighting, and you've made it this far."
Once you win Katou's loyalty, he is very tenacious and fiercely loyal to you. It's honestly not that hard to win his loyalty— all you have to do is give him any sort of positive attention. It's Kira's small pieces of attention in life towards Katou that won his eternal loyalty to Kira, all the more reason he became bitter when Lucifer emerged. It's the way that Setsuna rescued Katou from himself and brought him back that won Katou's loyalty to him, and a willingness to die multiple times to help Setsuna in his fight against heaven and hell.
By the time he died for good, Katou still thought little of himself, but he was able to accept his own death. "I'm not fit to enter heaven," but at least he had finally learned to fight for what he wanted.
POWER:
Astral Powers (canon)
After becoming part-angel— specifically with the powers of the Organic Angel, Alexiel— Katou theoretically has the ability to use all the same astral powers an angel does (which includes being able to sense other angels/demons/etc, astral... lasers I guess?, and a variety of specialized skills depending on the angel)...
...However, so far, all Katou's figured out how to use is pull three giant, feathery wings in and out of existence on his back.
Self-vicissitude (canon)
This is the ability to shift the features of his body to look like anyone vaguely humanoid, so long as he can concentrate on their appearance. This does include his own face, because without using this ability, he's got no face or features aside from a vaguely humanoid shape. The ability mainly stems from his body being made of plant material and not having a set shape.
Contact High
This is the ability to impart the effects of being on drugs with just a touch. Which drugs the touch mimicks depends on what Katou is trying for, because he can't use it accidentally. It can be noted, however, that he can't use it on himself— to his eternal irritation. (And as a note, I have no intentions of EVER using it OOCly without permission first.)
〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
So, stick with me here!
[ The camera is focused on a teenager with bleached blond hair and an incredulous expression ]
Last time I checked, it was 1999 and the world was ending. Or at least, as close to ending as it can be when everything on Earth's frozen and a bunch of asshole angels are having a pissing contest in heaven. Suddenly! Suddenly, I'm waking up from certain death and getting "oh, it's 2016 and you're in another world!" Another world?! What the hell is this?!
[ Then the teenager laughs and shrugs. ]
Not that I'm complaining! I wasn't ready to be dead yet, anyway. So! What the hell, why not wake up in fucking Florida. Which part of America is that anyway? I slept through most of class, you know! Or something like that, hah!
[ He pauses as something strikes him. ]
Oh, right! The name's Katou! So, which one of you— [ He points at the screen. ] —is going to answer some questions for me? Like when the hell did phones become mini-computers?!
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
Katou never thought he'd see Earth again.
It's not that he'd made his peace with dying, perse, but he'd accepted it with his own usual lack of grace. But something about waking up in some strangely high-tech place in America about seventeen years after his death had an impact on him. Seventeen years. He would have been thirty-four if he'd lived this long.
Or maybe he would have ended up dead in a ditch years ago, if things had gone a different way. But that was a moot point.
It was nighttime, and he supposed this was the perfect time for superhero antics. (Well, it would be if he were Registered. Frankly, he's still up in the air about when he wanted to do that. But that's besides the point.) Now was the time when the "criminal element" was out and about, (which honestly explains why Katou is out), and causing havoc.
Case in point was the gang of thugs down below, hassling some chick. At one time, Katou would have been a part of that group, but he'd like to tihnk he'd grown since he died. Perched up on a building top, watching the people below, he felt like a much different person than the guy he'd once been. A better person! ...Of course, a better person would probably also stop those thugs from mugging that lady.
...Oh hell, she's screaming now.
Katou sighed and stood up, stretching his wings out. Well, registered or not, at the very least he can beat up some thugs. Hell, it might even be fun. It's with that thought that he lands in front of the group, a grin spreading across his face.
"Hey, assholes!" Katou called out with a wicked glee. "Who wants to get their ass kicked first?" He grabs a rusted pipe from the ground and casually adds, "Don't worry, though! There's plenty of ass-kicking to go around for all of you."
Forget 'might,' this is definitely going to be fun, he thought to himself as the thugs turned their attention from their victim.
FINAL NOTES:
Does having a metal arm count as a power? Because as a side note, at one point before he dies, he has a sort of cyborg left arm grafted to his body after the original one rots off. It doesn't have any special abilities of its own, and the only thing really of note about it is that it has bladed fingertips.
